A young Nigerian man has called off his wedding just weeks before the ceremony after his fiancée’s family insisted on an additional ₦1.5 million payment for food, even though he had already paid ₦3.5 million as bride price.
The groom-to-be had reportedly taken care of all other wedding expenses but decided to cancel the marriage after the bride’s family refused to back down from their demand. His fiancée’s refusal to speak up during the dispute left him heartbroken, despite his affection for her.
Family’s Unyielding Demand
The groom allegedly tried to negotiate by offering to cover the catering himself, but the bride’s family maintained that the ₦1.5m was a non-negotiable tradition. Despite having hired event planners and settled every other cost, they remained adamant, showing no willingness to compromise.
A post on X (formerly Twitter) by user @itzchristunique revealed the man’s frustration, particularly over his fiancée’s silence and lack of support during the conflict.
Groom Walks Away
The post read:
“My friend’s brother, whose wedding was scheduled for December, just cancelled it. The bride’s family demanded ₦1.5m for food on the wedding day.”
“This was despite him hiring event planners who had already taken care of the catering. He tried to assure them but they claimed it was their family tradition. His biggest disappointment is that his fiancée said nothing when he asked her to intervene.”
“When I asked if there was more behind his decision, I was told yes. He had already spent over ₦3.5m on bride price and other expenses. He’s completely drained by the process, even though he still loves her deeply.”
“Honestly, I support his decision. It’s unfair for her family to keep demanding more while she remains silent.”
