The United Kingdom (UK) has announced that nearly 3,000 Nigerian-made products now qualify for zero or reduced import tariffs under its Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), introduced in 2023.
The disclosure was made by Ms. Mujina Kaindama, the UK Head of Trade Policy for Nigeria, during the UK DCTS Roadshow held in Kano. Kaindama explained that the initiative aims to simplify trade procedures and make it easier for developing countries like Nigeria to access UK markets by easing rules of origin and compliance processes.
She further noted that the programme is not just theoretical, as Nigerian exporters are being trained and guided by trade experts on how to effectively utilize the scheme to boost their businesses and expand exports.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Adiya Ode of Propcon+ highlighted Northern Nigeria’s strong agricultural capacity, emphasizing that the region produces diverse crops with high export potential. She added that agriculture remains central to achieving inclusive growth, job creation, and economic transformation in the country.
Dr. Ode stressed that the DCTS offers Nigerian agribusinesses a practical opportunity to scale their exports and compete favorably in global markets.
In the same vein, Mrs. Orji Gertrude, Director of the Investment Promotion Department at the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, revealed that the ministry has been actively collaborating with UK authorities since the programme’s inception. The goal, she said, is to ensure that Nigerian entrepreneurs receive the right information and support to fully harness the benefits of the scheme.
The roadshow was organized by Propcon+, in partnership with the Kano State Government and the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment.
