A Georgia woman has been arrested after two Rottweilers fatally mauled a two-year-old boy, Kaimir Jones, while she slept for hours.
Police discovered Kaimir’s body in the backyard of 48-year-old Stacy Wheeler Cobb’s home around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. The Valdosta Police Department confirmed the details in a statement released Monday.
Investigators believe the toddler managed to leave the house while Cobb was taking a long nap and unlocked the kennel holding the Rottweilers. Kaimir was the only child at the daycare that day, though officials said Cobb often watched up to ten children despite allegedly operating without a license.
Cobb reportedly told officers she “thought the child was fine” as she slept for more than two hours.
“This is a horrible and tragic event that should have never occurred,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan. “Because of this offender’s negligence, a mother has lost her child. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family. No words can ease their pain, and we also keep our first responders in our thoughts as they process this heartbreaking scene.”
Cobb now faces charges of second-degree murder and cruelty to children. The two Rottweilers, along with a third dog, were surrendered to Lowndes County Animal Control.
Kaimir’s mother, Adrianna Jones, shared on GoFundMe that her “intuition” prompted her to leave work early to check on her son after not hearing from Cobb for hours. “This was a heartbreaking, devastating, and traumatizing scene that I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” she wrote, adding that Cobb had come “highly recommended.”
