Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a significant salary increase for 67 security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, raising their monthly pay from N18,800 to N80,000.
The decision followed an emotional appeal made by the guards during the governor’s recent visit to the facility. One of the guards, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, highlighted their struggles with poor welfare, low wages, and the difficulty of supporting their families on meagre earnings.
“We have been here since before Otunba Alao Akala. We are not staff members but indigenes of Oyo State. Please help us; we are suffering. I have a family and three children, and my age is catching up with me,” the guard pleaded in tears.
Governor Makinde, after learning that the guards earned just N18,800 monthly while an outsourcing company was paid N27,000 per guard announced that they would be absorbed as ad-hoc staff.
He declared, “I can solve the problem right away. All 67 will be converted directly to ad-hoc workers, and you will receive N80,000 monthly starting from October.”
